Astronomy Lab Schedules

Astronomy labs are completed with a “home lab kit,” therefore you set your own schedule and pace. Home labs must be completed, however, by the course contract end-date.

Course Activity

  1. Read the Student Manual
  2. Contact your tutor (if he or she has not already contacted you); set up your study plan
  3. Begin Unit 1: Humanity and the Cosmos
  4. Work through Laboratory Exercise 0, to gain familiarity with the software; contact your tutor for instructions for obtaining the first telephone quiz
  5. Complete Quiz 1, and call your tutor for grading and feedback
  6. Complete Laboratory Exercise 1, and mail your work to your tutor for grading and feedback
  7. Begin Unit 2: Tools of the Astronomer
  8. Complete Quiz 2, and call your tutor for grading and feedback
  9. Complete Laboratory Exercise 2, and mail your work to your tutor for grading and feedback
  10. Begin Unit 3: The Solar System
  11. Complete Quiz 3, and call your tutor for grading and feedback
  12. Begin Unit 4: Stars and Their Properties
  13. At the end of Section 2, complete Laboratory Exercise 3, and mail your work to your tutor for grading and feedback
  14. Complete Quiz 4, and call your tutor for grading and feedback
  15. Complete Laboratory Exercise 4, and mail your work to your tutor for grading and feedback
    Call the Office of the Registrar to request the final examination
  16. Begin Unit 5: Galaxies and Cosmology
  17. Complete Laboratory Exercise 5, and mail your work to your tutor for
  18. Complete Quiz 5, and call your tutor for grading and feedback.
  19. Study for the final examination.
  20. Study for and write the final examination.

Alternative Lab Activities

Some students, particularly those with computers using a 64-bit operating system, have had difficulty running the laboratory software supplied in the course package. For those students, we have provided alternative versions of Laboratory Exercises 0, 1, and 2, based on the open source planetarium software STELLARIUM. Please use the links below to download the STELLARIUM software and the associated exercises.
