Canada Research Chair in Space Science, Instrumentation and Networking

I do wide-ranging research in several areas broadly related to space. Within AU, I have developed the AUGO observatory to observe auroras and other sky phenomena visible at our latitude.

My Courses

I have tutored or developed a wide range of courses in science and math. My course-related activities now focus on use of open courseware in science. I am developing more, and higher level, courses in subject areas related to my expertise, using exciting new technologies.

Reference Area

Here are the sunrise/sunset times for Athabasca and Edmonton in local STANDARD time (daylight savings time is obtained by adding one hour when appropriate), the hours of daylight and the azimuth (in degrees) of sunrise.

Note that at Northern Alberta latitudes, even the small distance Edmonton-Athabasca can lead to as much as 15 minutes difference in day length. The calculations were done using the MS-DOS ephem program. This may be found, along with references to other astronomical resources, on the Web site of its author Elwood Downey.
